The Border Belgian Blue Club held their eleventh annual spring show and sale, on Friday, 19th (Judging) and Saturday, 20th May (Sale), at Borderway Mart, Carlisle when auctioneers Harrison and Hetherington Limited offered the catalogued entry of 166 bulls, 50 females, 2 recipients and 4 Grade A embryos to the packed ringside of buyers. Auctioneer David Dickinson commented that bidding throughout the sale was on an animated note and bulls with power, style and hindquarters were keenly bid for by top commercial cattle breeders. The show and sale was kindly sponsored by British Linalux and the British Blue Cattle Society. The averages in most sections were up on the previous year, 26 lots sold at 4,000 guineas and above, and out of 126 bulls offered 115 found new homes.

The Reserve Intermediate Male Champion Blue Stone Postman Pat and the Junior Male Champion Blue Stone Patrick hit the jackpot when Mr T Dylan Rees, Llwynihirion, Crymych, Pembrokeshire sold them for the joint top price of 7,800 guineas. The first to go through the ring Postman Pat an October 1998 born blue and white son of the noted Belgium sire Totem De Choquenee (IS), and out of the homebred cow Blue Stone Miss Muffet ET, who herself is by the noted Linalux sire Ministre du Bouchelet, whose son Tamhorn Ocker ET sold for the top price of 7,000 guineas Carlisle May 1999. Postman Pat travels back to Pembrokeshire to join the Penfro herd of Messrs GG Jenkins & Sons, Nantyclun, Crymych. Blue Stone Patrick a November, 1998 blue and white son out of Blue Stone Nerys ET, and by Acajou de Somme (IS) who himself is by the renowned Galopeur joins the Hanging Wells herd of Messrs MW Skidmore, North Hanging Wells, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham.

Next at 7,000 guineas was the 2nd prize bull Almeley Pickles ET Danish, a May, 1998 blue roan son of Visconti de St Fontaine (IS) and out of Astbury Emily ET Danish, whose sons have sold to 5,800 guineas and 5,000 guineas. Pickles was shown by Graham L Morgan, The Cider Mill, Tillington, Herefordshire and after being keenly sought after was knocked down to Mr BK Ryder, Newton Farm, Annan Water, Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

Regular consignor to Carlisle Michele Wilde, Ridge Farm, Dean Farm Lane, Soulbury, Nr. Leighton Buzzard sold another Visconti de St Fontaine (IS) son Ridge Dean Rainer ET, this blue roan February, 1999 born bull is out of Michele's very successful show cow Ridge Dean Kosher who has won numerous Female Championships at the Royal shows, most recently gaining the prestigious Supreme Championship at the Royal Show 1999. Rainer was bought by Mr JC Pickard, Bradley Hall Farm, Goldacre, Great Harwood for 6,500 guineas.

Graham L Morgan sold another of his excellent consignment for 6,200 guineas to fellow enthusiasts Messrs I Evans & Son, Seifion herd based at Hendreseifion, Machynlleth, Powys. This 1st prize, black and white, May 1998 born bull Almeley Penguin ET Danish is a full ET brother to the aforementioned Almeley Pickles ET Danish.

The judge J de Marneffe (Croix De Mer Herd) Belgium awarded the Supreme Championship to Messrs S & GA Potter, Westside, Topcliffe, Thirsk with their Intermediate Champion Brookfield Presley ET, an August 1998 son of Elite de L'Orgelot (IS), and out of their top brood cow Highfield Jewel ET. Signing the cheque for 4,200 guineas was Lowesby Farms, Lowesby Hall, Lowesby, Leics.

The Reserve Supreme Championship, Senior Male Championship and Border Club Special Trophy was awarded to Mr KH Twentyman, Croft House Farm, Aughertree, Ireby who sold Kess Prodigy bred by Mr Kevin Glaze, Holsteins, Aberhafesp, Powys. Prodigy a January 1998 born white son of the extensively used Philipper de Remichampagne (IS) and out of Kess Lowri was bid to 3,900 guineas by Mr & Mrs PA Kermode, Orrisdale Farm, Ballasalla, Isle of Man.

In the Female section the Championship and top price of 4,000 guineas was gained by Messrs AJ & DA Wilkinson, Springfield Farm, Out Rawcliffe, Preston with their 16 month old sweet blue and white heifer Springfield Roxy ET. She is by the noted Lawns Dominic and is the first heifer calf out of the 1999 Cheshire Show Supreme Interbreed Champion Ovatie Van De Wolvendree. Roxy travels to Castle Douglas to join the Clarebrand herd of Messrs WT McMiken, Nether Ernambrie.

Next at 3,200 guineas was the Reserve Female Champion Woodview Olivia ET, who sold in-calf to the Linalux sire Tintin de My. She is a June 1997 born heifer by the Genus sire Ingenieux du Stordeur, who is the top breeder of both pedigree and fatstock show champions, and is from one of the easiest calving strains in the breed. Olivia was bred and exhibited by Andrew Craig, Woodview House, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry and purchased by Messrs A & S Jones, Leodest Farm, Kirk Andreas, Isle of Man.

At 3,000 guineas was the 5th prize served heifer, Aldingham Prada a February, 1998 born daughter of the all Black sire Springhill Kid ET and out of Ridge Dean Kali. Prada was shown by Mark Towers, Cottage Park, Aldingham, Ulverston and was sold in-calf to Seduisant de Fooz (IS) to the aforementioned Mr JC Pickard, Bradley Hall Farm (Goldacre herd).
