2002 Spring Show & Sale

Friday 17th May 2002

After a year of uncertainty in the farming industry the Border Belgian Blue Club finally staged their Twelfth Annual Spring Show & Sale on Thursday 16th May (Judging of all classes of bulls) and Friday 17th May (Judging of all classes of females, the Championships and sale), at Borderway Mart, Carlisle when auctioneers Harrison and Hetherington Limited offered the catalogued entry of 143 bulls and 54 females to a packed ringside of buyers.

Auctioneer David Dickinson commented that there was a very good show of bulls, and the top end met a very fast trade, with a nice show of females. The show and sale was very kindly sponsored by British Linalux and the British Blue Cattle Society.

The demand for quality stock was so high that there was a near sell out of all cattle with two bulls making 10,000gns, 500gns short of the breed record for a bull (10,500gns) and 32 lots sold at 4,000gns and above. With the overall average for bulls nearly beating the record of £3,749.52, which was set in May 1995 and 36 Junior bulls reaching a record average of £4,060.00.

The second bull to be sold at 10,000gns was the Reserve Junior Male Champion Ridge Dean Springer, this dark blue and white October 2000 son of Seduisant De Fooz and out of the homebred cow Popsicle who has the 2nd highest EBV of the breed and has won many championships, and with her dam being the famous Ridge Dean Jessie who won all three Royals in 1994 means Springer has exceptional breeding behind him. He was bred and shown by Michele Wilde who needs no introduction having been on the show circuit and selling top quality animals for a number of years now. After being very keenly sought after Springer was knocked down to local enthusiasts M Bindloss & Son, Shap Abbey, Shap, Penrith. Michele who farms at Ridge Farm, Soulbury, Nr. Leighton Buzzard, Beds sold a string of bulls to average £5,856.66.

Michele Wilde went on to sell the next top price bull Ridge Dean Spitfire an all black September 2000 born bull by Michele’s homebred black bull Mahogany and out of her homebred cow K P for 8,000gns to WA Errington, Townhead Dairy, Askham, Penrith. At 7,200gns was another of the consignment of bulls brought by Michele Wilde, Ridge Dean Super Fighter an October 2000 born bull who stood 4th in his class and is out of Cowden Prince Nazim ET who was purchased by Michele at Carlisle in May 1999 for 4,000gns. Super Fighter comes from an easy calving line, his dam being Ridge Dean Joan the champion pure bred heifer at Smithfield 1993 and his maternal grand sire being the noted Park Daimler.

The judge Monsieur Francis Goose, Belgium commented that there was a good show of cattle and some of the bulls would have been well placed at shows in Belgium. The young stock were taller and heavier than their counterparts. He also said that one of the things he was looking for during his selection process was cattle that moved well. Monsieur Goose awarded the Female, Supreme Championship and Border Club Special Trophy to AJ & DA Wilkinson, Springfield Farm, Out Rawcliffe, Preston for one of their favourite cows Springfield Orchidea ET by the prolific show winner and outstanding sire Bringlee Freeman ET and out of Vicieuse D’Ochain. She has been flushed successfully twice by Alan & Deirdre and calved twice herself. Signing the cheque for 3,800gns was W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House, Dufton, Appleby.

The Border Belgian Blue Club Chairman Brian Wheatley presented Monsieur Francis Goose with a Belgian Blue Border Fine Art as a token of the clubs’ appreciation for the Belgian herd book sending official judges to judge the spring show & sale.
