Tenth Annual Calf Show
The Border British Blue Club staged their Tenth annual open calf show on Wednesday 18th February 2009 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle when nearly all of the 51 catalogued entries were forward for judging. This was made up of 21 males and 30 females all UK born pedigree registered calves born on or after 1st January 2008. The club would like to thank the sponsors of this event, BBG, for supplying the semen vouchers, British Blue Cattle Society for the rosettes and championship sash, Harrison and Hetherington Ltd for the catalogue and the premises, H&H Insurance Brokers Ltd for the championship prize money, Massey Bros. (Feeds) for the Perpetual Shield awarded to the champion calf and Norbreck Genetics for the Perpetual Shield for the winner of the young handler class.
The Judge Morag Cartney had the very difficult task of judging the calves. She commented that the calves were well turned out and of exceptional quality throughout. A credit to all exhibitors! Sadly one or two calves didn’t make it to the show. Due to the snow prior to the event they were unable to halter train their calves and get them ready for show. Better luck next year!
The male championship and reserve overall championship was awarded to Kevin Watret, 25 North Field Park, Annan, Dumfriesshire with Solway View Dynamite ET an April 2008 son out of a Baron Du Bois Bauloye IS and Bringlee Sandy flush.
The female and overall championship was awarded to Alan & Deirdre Wilkinson, Springfield Farm, Out Rawcliffe, Preston with Springfield Darcy ET an August 2008 daughter out of the Blak Du Baty D’Eprave (IS) and Springfield Vichy flush. Alan & Deirdre Wilkinson also took the reserve male championship with Springfield Dusty ET a February 2008 son out of the Dafydd D’Ochain (IS) (SR) and Woodview Universe flush.
Mark & Elaine Hartley, Parklands Bungalow, Roughlee, Nelson, Lancs took the reserve female championship with Pendle Dazzle an April 2008 daughter of Blue Stone Union Jack and out of their homebred cow Pendle Witch.
Kevin Watret and R Seed & Son, Ashcroft, Chipping, Preston won the Progeny group with two Empire D’Ochain (IS) calves. The first was a male calf Parsonage Drew (1st in his class) and the second a heifer Solway View Drambuie ET (1st in her class). The reserve progeny group went to two Blue Stone Union Jack daughters shown by Mark & Elaine Hartley. The first was Pendle Dazzle (1st in her class & reserve female champion), and the second Pendle Dotty (2nd in her class) an April 2008 born calf out of Pendle Robinea. There were more young handlers than we have had in the past, partly due to the half term break. It was great to see them all taking it seriously. Everyone of them kept a very close eye on the judge.
The judge awarded Josh Bellas who recently turned 9 the championship award leading Croftends Dan and Phil Halhead’s niece Gabby presented the Norbreck Genetics perpetual shield to Josh. Isabella Hartley was runner up leading Pendle DJ. Well done to everyone else who really showed great improvements on previous years.
