Carlisle Annual Spring Show & Sale 2009Friday 15th & Saturday 16th May 2009 There was exceptionally strong demand for the senior bulls which was
reflected in the average of £5,581.41, with a strong commercial trade throughout
the day and buyers keenly bidding on animals which met their criteria. There
were 77 more bulls sold on the year to average an impressive £5,015.57.
There was an increased number of females offered for sale and were keenly
sought after.
The judge went on to back his judgement by purchasing his overall female and supreme champion Croftends Candy ET bred and exhibited by Border club enthusiasts JE Bellas & Son, Croft Ends Farm, Appleby. Candy a 17 month old daughter from the Dafydd D’Ochain and Lismannan Sally Flush was knocked down for 6,000gns and was shown and owned by 9 year old Josh Bellas.
He awarded the Senior Male, Overall Male and Reserve Supreme Championship to Graham Jones, Sunnyside Farm, Hadnall, Shrewsbury, Shropshire with his single entry Graymar Churchill, an April 2007 born son of Bringlee Talbot and out of Bringlee Viv. Churchill was knocked down for 8,000gns to S Whiteford, St Johns Kirk, Symington, Biggar.
It was the reserve intermediate male champion Tamhorn Crackerjack ET, an August, 2007 ET son of Empire D’Ochain and the show winning dam Annanwater Vine that topped the sale at 16,000gns for Danny & Jane Wyllie of the renowned Tamhorn herd, Pessall Farm, Edingale, Nr. Tamworth, Staffs. The final bid for the herd’s first Empire son, a blue and white sale topper came from H Harvey & Son, Waxham Hall, Sea Palling, Norwich, Norfolk to join their Waxham herd.
The fourth prize winning bull from JH Pedley, Oak Tree Farm, Barbon, Carnforth, Lancs secured the second leading bull price of 14,000gns. Oak Tree Collosuss ET a powerful 18 month old blue and white bull was keenly bid for but it was JC Innes & Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly, Aberdeen (Strathbogie herd) who secured the final bid. Collosuss is an ET son of Harley Du Chateau Lebrun (IS) and Oak Tree White Star. The Pedley family also won the Border Club Special trophy for the highest priced animal owned by a member of the Club.
The junior male champion and reserve overall male champion, Auchenlay Coll, made the next best price, selling at 13,500gns for Perthshire breeders’ R & M Paterson, Upper Auchenlay, Dunblane. Coll an outstanding black, 19 month old son of Mountjoy Utopia and out of Auchenlay White Magic Rose who is full sister of Auchenlay Vagabond, the record price 21,000gns Carlisle Champion May 2005. He was successfully purchased by Balfour Baillie, Sebay Cottage, Tankerness, Orkney Islands.
R & M Paterson sold the next lot for 11,200gns to James Strathern, Foot O Green Farm, Whins of Milton, Stirling. Auchenlay Celt ET, a black, 18 month old son of the Mountjoy Utopia and Auchenlay Venus flush stood third in his class.
A lot later, David Thompson, High Drybarrows, Bampton, Penrith took his second prize winning bull Drybarrows Cawdale into the ring where he sold for 12,500gns to pedigree breeder GL Morgan, Cider Mill, Tillington, Herefordshire. Cawdale, a November 2007 blue roan British type bull is a son of Hazelwood Uranus and out of Woodview Winifred.
There were three lots sold for 11,000gns the first through the ring was Newton Blues Chico ET from Malcolm Telfer and Helen Claxton, Newton High House, Newton, Stocksfield, Northumberland. Chico is a two year old son of the Reinbeck Rubin and Bradwall Olivia flush. This second prize winning bull was purchased by an undisclosed buyer.
Matching that price was Greystone Cannon, a July 2007 son of Empire D’Ochain (IS) and out of Hazeldown Mystic Queen. Consigned by the Coates Family, Rainscar Farm, Stainforth, Settle. This first prize winning bull was knocked down to Pedigree breeders’ GG Jenkins & Son, Nantyclun, Brynberian, Crymych, Dyffed.
Also hitting the high spots at 11,000gns was a Bringlee Volkawagon bred son, Dragon Blues Champ, who took the intermediate male championship and was shown by GW & K Williams, Tynllyn, Llanwnnen, Lampeter. This eye-catching August 2007 bull bred from Dundrod Sarah, a Philipper sired cow, sold jointly to Norbreck Genetics, Lancaster and to pedigree breeder JC Walker & Son, Brennand Farm, Dunsop Bridge, Clitheroe, Lancashire. Dragon Blues Champ lives up to his name winning first prize on his every show outing during the 2008 show season!
Also reaching the five figure mark was the best from the Paulern consignment of ER Hemmings & Co Farmers, Hay Lane Farm, Horsley, Nailsworth, Glos. Paulern Chapman ET, a March 2007 born son of the Serum D’Anloy and Paulern Audrey flush, sold for 10,000gns to go to LP Jenkinson & Son, Alscott Farm, Shebbear, Beaworthy, Devon. Chapman an exceptional bull with very good figures in the top 5% of the breed stood 1st in his class.
Another Empire D’Ochain bred son, Brookfield Columbus ET from regular consignors to Carlisle, Stephen Potter’s Brookfield stable, Westside, Topcliffe, Thirsk sold for 10,000gns. Columbus ET, a 20 month old dark blue bull out of the RASE Supreme Champion 2003 Brookfield Rhanne sold to Stephen & Co, Meikle Geddes Farm, Nairn, Inverness.
Leading the ladies was the 1st prize winning senior maiden heifer Tyddyn Ciara ET out of the Cajoleur De Rettigny and Bringlee Wanova flush. Consigned by Gerwyn Owen, Tyddyn Tudor, Llawfihangel, Corwen and after much bidding she was finally knocked down for 9,400gns to an undisclosed buyer. Her full sister Tyddyn Citrus ET was sold for 6,000gns to JP Graham & Son, The Wreay, Wigton, Cumbria.
Two first prize winning heifers sold for 7,000gns, the first through the ring was Broadlands Coral ET, out of the Dafydd D’Ochain and Widewath Virginia flush, from Cook & Colman, Broad Farm, Smallburgh, Norwich, Norfolk and sold to Peter Jones & Sons, Penrheol Farm, Talsarn, Nr Lampeter, Ceredigion.
Next through the ring, on 7,000gns from Ingrid Phillips, Cnwc Gwyn, Plump, Llandysul, Ceredigion was Balzar Dancing Queen, a February 2008 daughter Henlli Wishmaster and by the naturally calving Balzer Virginia. She was purchased by Watret & Ryder, 25 Northfield Park, Annan, Dumfriesshire.
