Carlisle Annual Spring Show & Sale 2014
"Blues" In Demand - Average up £808 with 84% Clearance
British Blue Breeders showcased a quality line-up of cattle with exceptional power and quality at the Border British Blue Club’s Twenty-fourth Annual Spring Show & Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 17 May with a top call of 13,000gns.
The show and sale was kindly sponsored by Cogent, Norbrook Pharmaceuticals and Galloway & MacLeod (Prize Money), British Blue Cattle Society and Border Club (Advertising).
The judge, Robert Neill, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh had the task of judging the 14 classes and championships the day prior to the sale.
Top price of the day 13,000gns went to Richard Mowbray, 34 Droit Road, Newtonstewart, Co. Tyrone with an Intermediate bull, Droit Hector, a 23 month old Dark Blue Roan son by Mountjoy Utopia and out of a homebred cow Droit Elsa ET. With 400-day growth figures and carcase profitability figures in the top 5% of the breed; Hector, was knocked down to, Page Bros, Lodge Farm, Northamptonshire.
John & Richard Pedley, Oaktree Farm, Barbon, Lancashire bought the Senior Male, Overall Male Champion and Supreme Champion, Tweeddale Hamish ET for the next highest price 12,000gns which was exhibited by Border Club enthusiasts Redhead & Watson, Bowsden Moor, Bowsden, Berwick-upon-Tweed. Hamish a 26 month old black & white bull, boasting growth and carcase figures in the top of the breed, is the first son to be offered for sale by Tweeddale Ebony and out of Tweeddale Enhance who is the best cow in the Tweeddale herd and won the Junior Championship at RHAS as a heifer. Jonathan & Jayne Watson also win the Border Club Special trophy for the highest priced animal owned by a member of the Club.
Third top price of the day 11,000gns went to Graham Morgan, Cider Mill, Tillington, Herefordshire with an Intermediate bull, Almeley Hatrick, a 24 month old son by Drybarrows Cawdale who sold for 12,500gns Carlisle May 2009 and out of a homebred cow Almeley Ethel ET. Hatrick a bull with exceptional growth and power and in the top 20% of the breed for calving ease was knocked down to DMG Millichap & Partners, Hendre Owen Farm, Duffryn, Rhondda, Glamorgan.
A Woodburn & Son, Netherwood, Muirkirk, Ayrshire took his Reserve Senior Male Champion & Reserve Overall Male Champion winning bull into the ring and was bid to 9,500gns for Netherwood Hercules a 25 month old black son by his homebred bull Netherwood Epic ET by Dafydd D’Ochain. Hercules was purchased by MT Findlay & Son, Hallington High Farm, Hallington, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Also on 9,500gns was the Reserve Intermediate Male Champion from Redhead & Watson. Tweeddale Hi Tech ET, a 24 month old blue roan son from the Dafydd D’Ochain (IS) and Tweeddale Fussy ET flush was successfully knocked down to DC Rees & Son, Pencrug Farm, Cradoc Road, Brecon, Powys.
Hi Tech was one of 5 Superior Carcase Sire bulls in the sale – Lot 4, Andreayas Garey @ 3,000gns; Lot 6, Aultmore Gomez @ 5,100gns; Lot 14, Aultmore Harley @ 4,300gns; Lot 29, Springhill Henry @ 2,400gns and Lot 33, Tweeddale Hi Tech @ 9,500gns. These five bulls averaged 4,860gns. The purchaser of these bulls will be eligible to claim £5.00 per calf on the progeny of the bull – confined to a maximum of 50 calves, sired by natural service, during a claim period of up to 4 years (3 crops of calves) from the purchase date of the bull.
Next in the price ratings, also from Graham Morganwas Almeley Handyman again by Drybarrows Cawdale and out of Bonerbo Buttercup ET. Handyman stood 3rd in his class and was successfuly purchased for 9,000gns by A Neachell & Son, Shrubbery Farm, Daniels Lane, Walsall, West Midlands to join their Cromwell Herd. Handyman has calving ease figures in the top 10% of the breed and a carcase profitability index in the top 15%.
Also hitting the high spots at 8,500gns was a Nether Hall Buster ET bred son and fourth prize winning junior bull, Dragon Blues Hotman, shown by Geraint & Kim Williams, Tynllyn, Llanwnnen, Lampeter. This eye-catching 21 month old, black & white bull out of Dragon Blues Daisy ET sold to M Read, Brook House, Hemingby, Horncastle, Lincs.
Messrs R & M Paterson of the Auchenlay herd based in Dunblane took the next leading price at 8,200gns. Auchenlay Hunter ET, a son from the Mountjoy Utopia (SR) and Auchenlay Vanilla flush stood 1st in his class in the show. Hunter is full brother to Auchenlay Echo who sold to Cogent and has growth figures in the top 5% of the breed. He was sold to JA Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Hall Farm, Ratlinghope, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
The Intermediate Male Champion came from Paul Dawes, Kipperknowle Farm, Dinmore with Dinmore Hermes ET, an Empire D’Ochain son out of Bringlee Connie, with outstanding growth figures. Standing as Junior Male Champion was Whitestone Handsomeboy ET from GA & EJ Davies, Brynawel, Llandysul. Sired by Kilowatt D’Ochain and out of Henlli Dolce, Handsomeboy found a new home with L Raine & Sons, Coach and Horses, Spital, Bowes at 6,000gns. Standing reserve to him was Oak Tree Herbie from John & Richard Pedley, Barbon. Another Mountjoy Utopia son out of College Valley Erica, Herbie, who boasts excellent growth figures and a carcase profitability index of +20 (Breed Av. +11) finds a new home with Messrs. Stobart, Grains O Beck, Middleton in Teesdale at 5,500gns.
The leading female price went to Redhead & Watson, Bowsden Moor with Tweeddale Izzy by Mountjoy Utopia (SR) and out of Tweeddale Eureka ET. Izzy stood 2nd in her class and was purchased for 4,600gns by R Alun Elias, Hendre Cennin Isaf, Garndolbenmaen. Izzy boasts calving figures in the top 15% of the breed and 400-day growth in the top 10%.
Kevin Watret, Northfield Park, Annan took his single entry into the ring and was bid to 4,300gns for Solway View Izzy ET a 6 month old black & white ET heifer calf by Colos Van Daisel (IS) and out of his top show winning cow Broomfield Vivien. Izzy sold with her recipient dam and was purchased by IS Sinclair, Clyth Mains, Lybster, Caithness.
The Female and Reserve Supreme Champion was Blue Mount Honey, from Deric W Noble, Kaimrigend, Biggar, Lanarkshire. This black and white, June 2012 hiefer was sired by Boherard Cantona and out of Sharplaw Echo.
