New Breed Record Smashed for Bulls
A new breed record for a British Blue bull was smashed at the Border British Blue Club' s Twenty-seventh Annual Spring Show & Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 20th May when Dragon Blues Kai ET (lot 31) shown by GW & K Williams sold for 24,000gns. Kai had taken the reserve senior male championship in the show. The supreme champion, Bedgebury Kent (lot 34) offered by Andrew Price sold for 15,000gns and joins the Stoneleigh herd for EC Haste & Sons. A further 5 bulls all sold at 10,000gns or above with a clearance of 84% for the bulls. Topping the females at 7,000gns was Mel & Diane Lucas' cow Lukeroyal Fidget ET (lot 143)
The judge, Andrew Anderson, Smallburn Farms Ltd, Elgin, Moray had the task of judging the 16 classes and championships the day prior to the sale.
Top price of the day and new bull breed record of 24,000gns was Dragon Blues Kai ET (lot 31) , a black & white entry from GW & K Williams. Kai won his class then went on to secure the Senior Male Reserve Championship. He is a 24 month old son of the Tweeddale Hebony and Dragon Blues Gweno ET flush. He was keenly sought after but the successful bid came from TE Jones & Co, Bailea Farm, Sennybridge, Powys.
Next in the rice ratings, was our Overall Champion, Bedgebury Kent (lot 34) from Andrew Price. An exceptionally powerful blue roan, 2 year old bull by Germinal de Fooz and out of the homebred cow Fancy Pants by Ballygrange Alex. Kent won his class and took the Intermediate Male & Overall Male championship, then went on to take the supreme championship. He was purchased by Andrew Haste for his Stoneleigh herd based in Devon for 15,000gns.
Also hitting the high spots at 12,000gns, was Dragon Blues Kevin ET (lot 15), a 26 month old bull from the same flush, as the top price bull Dragon Blues Kai. Kevin, who' s 200-day weight figures are in the top 1% of the breed, stood 2nd in his class and was knocked down to H Harvey & Son, Waxham Hall, Norwich, Norfolk.
Next in the price ratings, also from GW & K Williams was Dagon Blues King ET (lot 10), an eye-catching 27 month old black bull from the Cromwell Fendt and Dragon Blues Hope flush. He stood first in his class and goes to local farmer Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall, Ainstable, Carlisle for 11,800gns.
Three bull entries sold for 10,000gns each, Kevin Watret's Solway View Kelvin ET (20) was first through the ring. He had stood senior male champion, reserve overall male & reserve supreme champion in the show. Kelvin, is an exceptional 19 month old bull, from the Solway View Firecracker and Bringlee Evadine flush. He is no stranger to the show ring having won the reserve junior male champion at the Royal Highland Show 2016; junior champion and reserve junior interbreed champion Stars of the Future 2015. The successful bid came from Kedzlie Farms Ltd, Blainslie, Lauderdale, Galashiels. Kevin also wins the 'Brian Wheatley Memorial Trophy' for the highest priced animal owned by a member of the Border British Blue Club.
From the same stable also on 10,000gns was Solway View King Kong (lot 29 who stood 3rd in his class. King Kong is a 2 year old son of Solway View Dynamite ET and out of Bridgemuir Dolly ET. He was knocked down to W Ridley, Wood Hall, Hesket New Market, Wigton.
Also selling at the same price was Almeley Kwasimodo (lot 39) shown by Graham Morgan. This 23 month old son of Colos Van Daisel and out of Almeley Forever Chelsea by Drybarrows Cawdale stood 2nd in his class and joins the Gass Herd of Andrew Kay, Gass Farm, Maybole, Ayrshire.
Next on 9,500gns was the last bull through the ring, Downbyrigg Legend ET (lot 96) from local breeder Neil Forrester. This 16 month old sold from the Colos van Daisel and Springfield Carissa flush, he stood 1st in his class and sold to JA Wood & Sons, Kinnerton Hall Farm, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
The leading female price went to Mel & Diane Lucas for their 2nd prize winning cow Lukeroyal Fidget ET (lot 143) from the Baron du bois Bauloye and Lukeroyal Clarabelle flush. She was sold for 7,000gns to an undisclosed buyer.
Next on 6,800gns was the first prize winning heifer and calf from local enthusiast Greg Jackson. Woodend Jamelia (lot 147), a January 2014 born heifer by Atok Chancellor and out of Springfield Gloria sold with her 5 month old bull calf at foot "Woodend Logan", by Attribut Du Fond De Bois to B Dufton, Huntly, Aberdeenshire Blackmuir Livestock, Keith, Banffshire
Also hitting the high notes, again from Greg Jackson was his 1st prize winning maiden heifer Woodend Kendra (lot 101) Kendra, a March 2015 heifer by Atok Chancellor and out of Springfield Georgia was sold to Preston Farms, Omagh, Co. Tyrone for 5,000gns.
Also on 5,000gns was Top Side Lexi ET (lot 112) from Ross & Elaine Pattinson. Lexi stood 2nd in her class and is from the Bringlee Carlos and Ridge Dean Auntie flush. This January 2016 born heifer was much admired but the successful bid came from EW & JR Parkinson, Hareden Hall Farm, Dunsop Bridge, Clitheroe, Lancs.
The Female Championship was awarded to Richard Tiplady withTipladys Lottie (lot 129) by Tweeddale Ironman and out of Franks Exasperation ET. This smart, nearly all black heifer was knocked down to our judge Andrew Anderson, Smallburn Farm, Elgin, Moray for 4,500gns. She also wins the Challenge Trophy for the best animal opposite sex to the champion.
