GASS OKAY SMASHES NEW BULL BREED RECORD FOR BRITISH BLUES AT 30,000gns
British Blue Cattle Society Breeders showcased a quality line-up of cattle with exceptional power and quality at the Border British Blue Club’s Thirtieth Annual Spring Show & Sale at Carlisle on Saturday 15 May 2021. There was exceptionally strong demand for the senior bulls which was reflected in the average of £9698.68. 11 bulls & 3 females broke the five figure barrier, 6 of these exceeding 15,000gns.

Our Judge Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire did a tremendous job in the show ring the day before and the prices certainly reflected his selections.
A new breed record for a British Blue bull was smashed when Gass Okay (lot 13) shown by Andrew R Kay sold for 30,000gns. Okay had taken the senior male, overall male & supreme championship in the show. It is exactly 11 years to the day since Andrew made his debut at Carlisle selling the top price bull Gass Cheggers for 16,000gns. History was made today at our 30th annual spring show and sale when Andrew sold Gass Okay for 30,000gns to fellow breeders Messrs Morgan to join their Almeley herd in Herefordshire. Okay is an exceptionally well grown, 25 month old, black bull son of the 10,000gns Almeley Kwasimodo and out of Gass India who is by Mountjoy Utopia.
Solway View Odin ET (lot 11) reserve senior male, reserve overall male & reserve supreme champion sold for 27000gns for Kevin Watret. Odin is a smart, 26 month old, black & white bull. He is from the Bedgebury Flat Out and Solway View Kesha flush, Kesha is one of Solway View’s most consistent breeding cows. After being keenly sought after the successful bid came from Coul Estate Partnership. Kevin also won the Border Club Special trophy for the highest priced animal owned by a member of the Club.
Next in the price ratings, from the same stable as the supreme champion came Gass Orbit (lot 14). Another well grown, 25 month old, black son of Almeley Kwasimodo and out of Gass Krystal. He stood 3rd in that strong class and was knocked down to Messrs Whiting, Colchester, Essex, for 18,000gns.
Also on 18,000gns, was Homilton Ozzy ET (lot 66) for Roly Carr. Ozzy, a September 2019 born son of the Heros Du Peroy and Homilton Iris flush. He stood 2nd in his class and after much bidding he was finally knocked down to Messrs Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge, Clitheroe, Lancs.
Mark & Elaine Hartley’s second prize winning bull Pendle Orbital (lot 57) sold for 16,000gns to Messrs Owen & Son, Gwynedd. Orbital is a well-muscled, August 2019 born, black and white bull by Jalon de Martinpre and out of Pendle Knock Em Out.
The Junior Male Champion Brownview Nelson ET (lot 68) was next in the price ratings for Ben Haigh. Nelson is from the Empire D’Ochain and Ballinakill Holly ET flush. This tremendous, September 2019 born bull was snapped up by Messrs Pennie & Son, Montgomery, Powys for 15,000gns.
Rhys Millichap sold his first prize winning bull Rhymil Orlando ET (lot 60) for 12,500gns to Messrs Owen, Newtown, Powys. Orlando is a stylish, August 2019 born, black and white son of the Tauro D’Ochain and Ryhmil Beauty flush.
Local farmers, Messrs Ridley, Hesket Newmarket, Wigton successful bid Blue Stone Obama ET (lot 59) to 11,500gns. Obama was exhibited by TD Rees and came 3rd in a strong class. He is a well grown, mobile, August 2019 born son of the Dragon Blues Factor ET and Blue Stone Goddess flush.
There were four lots sold for 10,000gns, the first through the ring was Thistle Orlando ET (lot 8) from Gavin Scott. Orlando is a black & white 27 month old son of the Solway View Firecracker and Drumlone Lindsey flush. This first prize winning bull was knocked down to Messrs Rees & Son, Brecon, Powys.
Matching that 10,000gns price tag was Dragon Blues Omigo (lot 44), a June 2019 son of Dragon Blues Kai and out of Dragon Blues Lady. Omigo was consigned by GW & K Williams. This second prize winning bull was bought by Messrs Lloyd & Co, Trefeglwys, Caerslis.
Also on 10,000gns, was Solway View Oliver ET (lot 62) from Kevin Watret. This third prize winning bull is from the Rocco De La Hasse and Solway View Kesha flush. He is an August 2019 born bull and took the eye of Messrs Holroyd & Sons, Wadsworth, Hebden Bridge.
Also hitting the high spots at 9,500gns was a Sandyvale Jagerbomb bred son and first prize winning blue and white bull, Auchenlay Oasis, (lot 42) shown by Border Club enthusiasts R & M Paterson. This eye-catching June 2019 bull bred from Auchenlay Krispy was sold to Messrs Wood & Sons, Ratlinghope, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
The first lot through the ring sold for 9,000gns for Chall Parsons. Trent Valley Neo ET (lot 1) stood third in his class and set the sale a light, after keen interest the successful bid came from Messrs Milburn, Greenhead, Brampton, Cumbria. Neo is an October 2018 born, powerful blue & white bull from the Ballygrange Dudley and Inishfree Hannah flush.
Also on 9,000gns was Auchenlay Oor Wullie ET (lot 74) from R & M Paterson. This November 2019 born bull stood second in his class. He is from the Sandyvale Jagerbomb and Guilliland Clarinda flush and was purchased by Messrs Wareham, Broad Oak, Heathfield, East Sussex.
FEMALES
Leading the ladies was our female champion Clifftown Peaches ET (lot 129) who sold for 12000gns for DS Townend. Peaches is a very correct, sweet, stylish young heifer and caught the eye of Messrs Jones, Lampeter, Ceredigion. She is a September 2020 born heifer from the Dodou De St Remacle and Clifftown Ladyluck flush.
Solway View Olisha (lot 104) from Kevin Watret sold to an undisclosed buyer for 11,000gns. Olisha is a naturally born daughter of the aforementioned Solway View Kesha and by Rocco De La Hasse. This September 2019 born heifer stood third in her class.
The last lot to go through the ring on 10,000gns, from the same herd as Olisha, was Solway View Olla ET (lot 97). Olla is a May 2019 born daughter of the Solway View Dynamite and the renowned Solway View Elegance flush. The Successful purchaser was Messrs. Jones, Tregynon, Powys
Sunnybank Poloma Faith ET (lot 110) from Henry Jewitt was our reserve female champion and sold for 4800gns.
