Carlisle Spring Suckled Calf Show & Sale

An unrivalled show of quality suckler bred cattle met an extremely strong demand from start to finish at the annual spring show and sale of continental cross steers and heifers held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Wednesday 22nd March 2017, when a catalogued entry of 1276 head were presented.

The majority of consignors enjoyed a substantial rise in values for their entries than that of the previous years sale.  Despite a very wintry morning in the North of England, a very strong company of buyers from all over the UK gathered to witness one of the best shows of cattle in the country.

The sale averages saw a rise in both the steer and heifer classes with the bullocks at £1069.13 (+£40.19) and the heifers leveling at £1013.98 (+ £23.62).

Securing the top price of the sale at £4400 was a British Blue cross heifer, Pandora, shown by Neil Hardisty of How Hall, Ennerdale, Cleator.  The black heifer is sired by the herds British Blue stock bull, Boothlow Ferrari and out of a homebred 7/8^th Limousin bred dam.  In the pre-sale judging, Pandora won the 1^st prize rosette in the British Blue heifer class and is no stranger to the show ring having won the 1^st prize ticket in the Baby Beef class at the Borderway Agri Expo 2016.  She was purchased by Messrs Alford of Cullompton, Devon.

Judging the single steer and heifer classes was Sharon Sellers of Lincoln who presented the championship rosette and the Edward Barton Memorial Trophy to Andrew Harrison of Grange Hall, Great Asby.  The winning entry, a red 8 month old Limousin bred steer, is sired by the herds stock bull Keskadale Cyclone and out of a British Blue x cow.  Backing her judgement, it was knocked down for £2800 to the judge Mrs Sellers.

The reserve overall championship position was won by Brian Hall of Ainstable Hall with his black British Blue cross heifer sired by the registered bull Moorsley Edge.

The second leading price of the sale also came from the Grange Hall pen of Andrew Harrison's.  Selling for £3800 was the 1st prize Limousin cross heifer which sold to Stewart Betts of Stirling.  This entry was sired by the homebred Limousin sire Noble Freddie who has also sired many noted national championship winners over the past few years.

The first entry to sell for £3300 was a black Limousin cross steer shown by Willie Barron of Morrow Edge Farm, Durham.  This entry is by the herds senior stock bull, Mereside Godolphin and is bred from a pure British Blue type heifer.  The 11 month old steer sold to Messrs Blair of Newport-on-Tay, Fife.

The second heifer to reach £3300 was a red Limousin cross heifer offered by T Laird & Son of Sunnyside Farm, Cumnock.  Having won the 3rd prize rosette from a strong entry at the pre-sale judging, she was sold to Mr A Dickinson of Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Reaching the £3000 mark was a Limousin cross heifer consigned by TF & C Robinson, Bog Hall, Kirkheaton.  This entry was succuessfully purchased by Anita Padfield of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

A further six entries all sold for £2000 or more which included - a red Limousin cross in the Baby Beef class from L Bamforth & Sons of Wainstalls, Halifax sold for £2400;  a Blonde cross steer shown by TH Harrison & Sons, Sleddale Hall, Penrith  was knocked down for £2300;  a red Limousin cross heifer entry from R & M Archer, Low Carry House, Hexham, was knocked down for £2200;  also selling for £2200 was the Limousin cross steer shown by E Telfer & Son, Newton High House.  A pair of black British Blue heifers from the Ainstable Hall pen of Brian Hall, were both sold for £2000. 

A total of 20 entries all sold for £1500 and above.  The event was kindly sponsored by Zoetis and Border Cars.

A highlight of the sale was the run of 50 plus cattle shown by Messrs Whiteford, Tercorrset.  This batch secured the leading consignment average of £1139 for a run of 50+ cattle.
