Blues top at 5,000gns at Moira
WITH 70% CLEARANCE FOR QUALITY BULLS The Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club were honoured to invite Gail Ellis from the Trencrom Herd, St Ives, Cornwall, to judge their Autumn Show & Sale of Pedigree Blues on Saturday 3rd November 2012. Her task being made even the more difficult, by the quality of animals before her. The Supreme Champion and Champion Male of the day being Ballyhossett George ET, a March 2011 born son of Empire D’Ochain, out of Knockagh Whoopee ET, bred & exhibited by Jason & Jennifer Edgar: Being in the top 10% in the breed for calving ease, with one of the lowest recorded birth weight EBV’s and also being in the top 30% of the breed for Carcass Yield Index. Ballyhosset George then went on to be knocked down to Neil & Irene Armstrong, from Silloth in Cumbria for 5,000gns and will join their “Goodyhills” Pedigree Blue Herd, recent winners of the Border British Blue Club Herd Competition.
The Reserve Supreme Champion being Annaghone Eve, a December 2009 cow, by Gitan Du PTi’t Mayeur, out of Annaghone Black Beauty, finding a new home with Messrs. Hughes, Rockwallace, Castleshane, Co. Monaghan for 2,000gns. “Eve” having a gestation length EBV in the top 10% and growth rates in the top 20% of the breed.
Reserve Male Champion being Bavan Future Star ET, a September 2010 Bull, by Bluegrass Cyclone out of Snowy Ridge Crystal. This animal, again, being in the top 10% of the breed for growth EBV’s and Carcass Yield Index, heading to a new home with Messrs. L Barr, in Londonderry.
The Reserve Female Champion going to Rorysglen Grace, bred and shown by Victoria Workman, a Gitan Du PTi’t Mayeur July 2011 heifer, out of Rorysglen Dreamgirl, being knocked down to Phil Shields, Keel Point, Dundrum.
The other leading prices being claimed by Jack, David and Anne Morrison’s Chatham Herd, with Chatham George, a March 2011 bull, being in the top 5% of the breed for Calving Ease, Growth, Carcass Yield Index and Pedigree Breeding Index, sold for 3,000gns to Les Wilson, Doagh; being followed by Chatham Glen, an April 2011 born bull, in the top 10% of the breed for Calving Ease, Growth and Carcass Yield Index, out of Chatham Bea, by their stock bull Paulern Verdi, making 2,600gns, again travelling home to Les Wilson, Doagh. Chatham Gareth, a March 2011 bull in the top 10% of the breed for Carcass Yield Index, Growth and Pedigree Breeding Index, out of Chatham Wendy, by Paulern Verdi, making 2,580gns, going to Paul OShane at Dungiven. Animals clearly demonstrating high EBV figures for Growth, Carcass traits and Calving Ease being clearly selected by potential purchasers. Auctioneer, Michael Taaffe commented that bulls that were very well grown for their age, with length but not excessive muscling and showing good mobility, from naturally calving bloodlines, were very easy to sell.
