Calf Show & Young Handler Competition 2015
The Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club held their 9th Annual Calf Show and Young Handler Competition on Saturday 8th August 2015 at Downpatrick Co-Operative Mart.
CALF SHOW
Sponsored by Donnelly Group, the calf show attracts great support and enthusiasm from the competitors. The competition was open to calves registered from May 2014 with judging in the capable hands of the well-known Mr Harold McKee from Kilkeel.
Male 4-6 months winner was Springhill Kangaroo from sire Drybarrows Cawdale and dam Springhill Handsome, owned by James Martin, Newtownards.
Male 7-9 months winner was Knockagh Jargon from sire Giga du Bois de Remont and dam Knockagh Gooday, owned by W J Ervine, Newtownabbey.
Male 10-12 months winner was Greenfield Jake from sire Affute du Ry Ossogne and dam Greenfield Ellie Mae, owned by Basil Dougherty, Kircubbin.
Male 13-15 months winner was Drumboy Jack Black from sire Visconti and dam Springbank Christmas, owned by Oliver McCann, Castlewellan. This animal also took Male Champion and Overall Reserve Champion.
Female 4-6 months winner was Springhill Kosher from sire Adajio de Bray and dam Springhill Golden Girl, owned by James Martin, Newtownards.
Female 7-9 months winner was Drumboy Jessie from sire Ballygrange Alex and dam Drumboy Glamour Girl, owned by Oliver McCann, Castlewellan.
Female 10-12 months winner was Rahoon Irene from sire Bringlee Blackstar and dam Ballyfin Deirdre, owned by Sam Robinson & Sons, Crossgar.
Female 13-15 months winner was Springhill Just a Girl from sire Imperial de L’Ecluse and dam Springhill Golden Girl, owned by James Martin, Newtownards. This animal also took Female Champion and Overall Champion.
Young Handler Competition
Kindly sponsored by Bank of Ireland, the competition was split into three different age groups for the young members to show their expertise and knowledge of their calves. The entrants proudly lead their calves round the ring and presented themselves to Harold for judging.
The Robinson Family from Crossgar had great success with Lewis taking first place in under 8 age group, Mathew first place in age group 9-12 and Christopher first place in age group 13-16. All entrants received a Northern Ireland Blue Cattle Club medal with plaques for the first place winners.
The club chairman, Jason Edgar thanked Harold for judging these events, Donnelly Group and Bank of Ireland for their sponsorship and concluded with thanks to the club members for their participation.
