Dispersal Sale of the Hazelwood Herd6th May 2006 Saturday the 6th May 2006 was a bittersweet day for the dispersal sale of the Hazelwood Herd of Doug and Sheila Hazel. The herd was established in 1985 with the intention of making the herd totally natural calving. After exporting embryos to the USA Doug became involved with the Cornell University, New York, in recording pelvic measurements. After giving a talk at Cambridge University and, in conjunction with Liverpool University, Doug advised several herds with regard to pelvic measurements. However, Doug’s expertise is not to be lost to the breed as following the sale it is his intention to establish a new herd with the “Chalton Hazel” prefix. Due to this being a Dispersal Sale and with some of the calves at foot being younger than 3 months old the cattle were not sold under the usual British Belgian Blue Cattle Society conditions. Consequently they had not been subjected to the usual Society inspection, however this did not deter the packed ring of buyers who were seemingly happy with Doug’s reputation and the 70 or so of his cattle on sale. The females had run with stock bulls V’t Goed ter Wallen or Hazelwood Viscount and the recently calved females had run with Hazelwood Whisper for part of the time and Hazelwood Wade more recently. Starting with the females, 16 of which had calves at foot, the highest price of the day, 4,800gns, was paid for Hazelwood Ursula a Hazelwood Sylvester daughter with her 5 months old bull calf, Hazelwood Antonio, a Hazelwood Upton son, at foot. Hazelwood Una, a Hazelwood Jake daughter with her 11 weeks old bull calf Hazelwood Blake, a Hazelwood Upton son, at foot, attracted the second highest female price of 3,900gns. Other cows with calves at foot making over 3,000gns were: Hazelwood Patsy an Ingenieux du Storder daughter with 12 weeks old heifer Hazelwood Bianca by V’t Goed Ter Wallen – 3,600gns Hazelwood Paulette a Hazelwood Jake daughter with 10 weeks old son Hazelwood Barnabas by Hazelwood Upton – 3,400gns Hazelwood Unity a Hazelwood Jupiter daughter with 11 weeks old heifer Hazelwood Betsy by Hazelwood Upton – 3,650gns Hazelwood Verona a Hazelwood Sylvester daughter with 11 weeks old son Hazelwood Barnaby by Hazelwood Upton – 3,100gns Not to be overshadowed by the cows and calves, two heifers made over 3,000gns as well: 24 months old Hazelwood Wisegirl a Hazelwood Sylvester daughter sold for 3,550gns and 25 months old Hazelwood Whitney a Hazelwood King daughter sold for 3,500gns. A further three daughters of Hazelwood Sylvester, 24 months old Wendy, 23 months old Waterlilly and 11 months old Angel each sold for more than 2,000gns. Top of the bulls was 24 months old Hazelwood Whisper, also a Sylvester son, who sold for 4,500gns. Hazelwood Winslow a 24 months old son of Blackmoor Rex sold for 3,000gns and Hazelwood Wade a 22 months old son of Hazelwood Jake sold for 2,350gns. A Hazelwood King son, Hazelwood Ajax at 15 months old sold for 2,100gns. A son of Hazelwood Sylvester, Hazelwood Augustas sold for 1,750gns at just 12 months old. An originally imported three years old bull V’t Goed ter Wallen, a Coquin de Ste Helene son sold for 2,200gns.
