PENDLE AND SPRINGFIELD HERDS STAR AT THE BORDERS

At the 2005 Borders Club Calf Show the youngstock of the Pendle herd of Mark and Elaine Hartley and the Springfield herd of Allan and Deirdre Wilkinson scored very high achievements.

PENDLE HERD

The Pendle herd was founded in 1996 by Mark and Elaine and with careful choice of cows and bulls soon established itself with quality stock.

At the 2004 Borders Calf Show Mark and Elaine’s daughter Isabella was judged Champion Young Handler at the tender age of seven years leading her young bull calf Pendle Valley. Isabella and Valley enjoyed a successful showing summer and now well grown, Valley is entered into the Society’s Show and Sale at Carlisle on May 20th/21st where he will undoubtedly attract keen interest and move on to a new home.

Isabella has now chosen a heifer calf to train and show this year. Sired by the herd’s former stock bull, Stowbeck Storm, Pendle Whizzy (d.o.b. 08.06.04 out of Pendle Snowflake) is her new show ring companion. Her younger brother Thomas has chosen a new calf for 2005, sired by Dansuer D’Embise, his heifer calf Pendle Wave (d.o.b. 25.04.04 out of Pendle Trixy, a full sister to Stowbeck Storm) made her debut at this year’s calf show.

In the young handlers class Thomas leading Pendle Wave was judged Reserve Champion, no mean feat at the tender age of 5 years handling a first time in the show ring 10-month-old heifer calf. Isabella on this occasion was placed fourth with Pendle Whizzy after equitting herself extremely professionally with an apprehensive 9-month-old heifer on its first time in the show ring. This quartet will certainly be a force to be reckoned with come the summer shows.

In the second of the heifer calf classes (01.05.04 – 03.08.04) another of the herd’s young stock, Pendle Witch (d.o.b. 1.05.04 by Stowbeck Storm out of Pendle Robena) took first place with Pendle Wave taking third place in the slightly older heifer class (28.01.04 – 25.04.04).

Stowbeck Storm was sold at the Society sale at Carlisle in May 2004 and a new stock bull, Blue Stone Union Jack, purchased at the same sale. Mark and Elaine report that Jack’s first crop of calves, born within the last week or so, are very promising being true to type and already showing quality.

SPRINGFIELD HERD

When Allan and Deirdre Wilkinson decided to enter their bull calves, Springfield Warrick and Springfield Wedgewood into the Borders Calf Show little would they have expected such a feast of Springfield progeny to be on display alongside their own.

Six of the prize winners in the show were out of daughters of their renowned cow Ovatie van de Wolvendree and herself being dam of a seventh. Of their own two entries Ovatie was the dam of one and grandam of the other. Another stalwart of the herd, Springfield Pepsi, was the dam of another prize-winning exhibit.

Alan Jackson and family brought along bull calf Headlind Winter Flash (d.o.b. 08.02.04) and heifer Headlind Wizz (d.o.b. 01.02.04) both bred from embryos flushed out of Ovatie’s daughter Springfield Tinga by Nounours de Wihogne.

Headlind Winter Flash was placed 1st in his class and overall Champion and then went on to accompany Alistair Jackson who was Judged Champion Young Handler of the Year. Headlind Wizz was awarded 2nd place in her class (female born 28.01.04 – 25.04.04)

John Dickinson of the Stalmine Moss herd entered Stalmine Moss Wilma (d.o.b. 20.02.04) and Stamine Moss Warrior (d.o.b. 23.04.04) sired by Tamhorn Sumo and both bred from embryos, Wilma out of Pepsi and Warrior out of Ovatie.

Warrior was third in his class (male born 01.01.04 – 23.02.04) but together they were paced first and Champions in the Progeny Group class (2 calves by the same sire, either sex out of different dams).

Bryan Ryder and family were showing a young bull Annanwater Waldo (d.o.b.03.02.04) and a heifer Annanwater Wallflower (d.o.b. 24.09.04) both bred from embryos. Waldo is by Nounours de Wihogne out of Springfield Tinga and was placed 2nd in his class (male born 01.01.04 – 23.04.04)

Wallflower is by Dansuer D’Embise and also out of Springfield Tinga, she was third in her class (female born 27.08.04 – 09.11.04) but accompanied by Carrock Willow (d.o.b. 03.08.04) also by Dansuer, in this case out of Springfield Tia Maria, becoming reserve champions in the Progeny Group class.

Springfield Tinga is owned by the Ryder Family and resides in their Annanwater herd.

Carrock Willow and Carrock Walnut (d.o.b. 31.07.04) were entered by SJ and RR Brough. Willow as mentioned above is by Danseur out of a flushing of Springfield Tia Maria, an Ovatie daughter. Walnut out of the same flushing regime was 4th in her class.

Springfield Tia Maria is owned by the Brough Family and is a member of their Carrock herd.

Allan and Deirdre’s own entries, Springfield Wedgewood (d.o.b. 0.2.11.04) by Nounours de Wihogne out of Springfield Ursula, an Ovatie daughter, and Springfield Warrick (d.o.b. 27.08.04) by As de Trefle du Vanova out of Ovatie went on to achieve 2nd and 4th in the same class (male born 30.04.04 – 0.11.04).

It may be of interest to note that Allan and Deirdre are entering the following stock, out of Ovatie, into the Society sale at Carlisle on 20th/21st May 2005.
