Royal Highland Show 2022
22nd - 25th June
A cow with a proven pedigree and an impressive run of offspring proved she was the one to beat when she lifted the Supreme Championship from a bumper entry of 41 British Blues at the Royal Highland Show on Thursday, 23 June.
That was Kevin Watret’s Solway View Kesha, a seven-year-old paraded in-calf by stockman, Ali Jackson. No stranger to the prizes, she has previously lifted the Reserve breed ticket at the Royal Welsh Show back in 2017 but is perhaps better known for her outstanding progeny which includes the 27,000gns Solway View Odin sold at Carlisle last May. Sired by the home-bred Solway View Firecracker, she is out of one of Kevin’s original brood cows, Bringlee Evadine, and also landed the Female Championship and Best Bred by Exhibitor prize.
“She’s a real super cow and youthful looking,” said the judge, Mark Hartley of the Pendle Herd. “She’s still got the same sparkle about her as when I judged her as a two-year-old.”
Females were the flavour of the day and following Kesha all the way through from the Female Championship to stand Reserve Supreme was Dean Saunders’ Droit Penny, which was originally bred by Richard Mowbray. This March, 2020-born daughter of Greystone Kellogs is out of Droit Jen.
“The Reserve is a very correct heifer with a great future in front of her and one I’d like to take home,” added Mr Hartley.
Among the males it was David and James McKerrow’s five-year-old stock bull, Solway View Monty, which lifted the Male Championship having already stood Inter-breed Champion at Angus Show just a couple of weeks previously. Sired by Tweeddale Ironman and out of Solway View Katie, he was praised for his mobility for his age.
The second prize senior bull, Ian McGarva’s Abington Pablo, went on to stand Reserve Male having already stood Junior Champion. Bred from Abington Monica and turning two in September, Pablo’s sire is Rocco De La Hasse.
The Reserve ticket in the Junior Championship went to Gillian Scott’s Thistle Rosetta, which is by Dodou De St Remacle and out of Drumlone Lindsey.
